13 October 2008, FraserStudios launches Ten local artists have now moved into FraserStudios, a brand new multi-disciplinary arts space transforming three vacant warehouses in Chippendale. They were chosen from almost 100 applicants to take the first of a series of three month residences, free of charge, as part of an exciting new arts initiative from Frasers Property. From street art to sculpture to poetry and performance, artists in the first two FraserStudios’ residencies offer an eclectic mix of art practice. Projects will range from the creation of a temporary greenhouse filled with local plant life to the construction of a vivid sculptural Christmas tree: demonstrating in their diversity an exploration of the wonderful, eclectic nature of Chippendale’s urban identity. FraserStudios will be officially launched on Sunday 19 October at 1pm by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore MP. If you are a Chippendale local or simply interested in the project and you’d like to attend the launch, please RSVP to Kathryn on 9252 3900. FraserStudios adds to the creative life of Chippendale An innovative inner-city space for Sydney artists is soon to open within the ‘old Kent Brewery’ site in Chippendale. From September, vacant warehouses at 10-14 Kensington St, Chippendale will be transformed into artist’s studios by Frasers Property in partnership with Queen Street Studio, a Chippendale-based, not-for-profit arts organisation. The three warehouses and five terraces along Kensington Street will provide free or subsidised temporary studio space for visual and performance artists, making creative use of properties which would otherwise remain vacant during the early stages of construction on the 5.8 hectare site. Development approval for FraserStudios has been granted by the City of Sydney, who has provided advice and assistance in getting the program off the ground. The FraserStudios project has two main program areas:
Open studios and artist showings will be held at the completion of each residency program and artists will be encouraged to participate in local community shows and events. Frasers Property also hopes that FrasersStudios will inspire local artists to produce work that can be featured in the future development of the brewery site. “Active and creative communities are vital to the energy and cohesion of our inner city neighbourhoods,” says Sam Chester, Co-Manager/Founder of Queen Street Studio. “Affordable studio space is near impossible to find in the inner city, so the FraserStudios project is a great initiative that we’re happy to be part of. We hope other developers will follow Frasers’ lead,” added Ms Chester. Artists are invited to apply now for the first two rounds of residencies, with applications closing 5 September. More information on the application process is available on the Queen Street Studio website: www.queenstreetstudio.com/fraserstudios.html Download information flyer here.

Martin van der Wal’s poetic photo essay celebrates the industrial heritage of the old Kent Brewery site March 2008 The scale and significance of the old Kent Brewery site requires sensitivity to both the future of Sydney and the character of the past. The first of many cultural projects to be undertaken at this site was commissioned in late 2007 when Frasers invited acclaimed architectural photographer, Martin van der Wal, to create a visual history of the site, its historic buildings and industrial ephemera.
Frasers asked for ‘a visual poem’ of the site, giving Martin van der Wal free access to the entire 5.8 hectare site, and Martin’s final collection of over 50 images has delivered that and much more. This captivating and evocative collection captures the quiet pause between the end of the brewing era and the commencement of building works. Martin’s moody, thought-provoking and richly textured photographs will be displayed in future buildings and be a resource for artists and historians as Frasers’ extensive cultural and public arts programme takes shape.
April 2008 On Tuesday 18 March, Frasers Property received approval from the Department of Planning to commence demolition works on the Frasers Broadway site. As part of this approval, Frasers must adhere to a number of conditions including work times and staging, truck movements and access, and waste management. Since December 2007, Frasers has had a dedicated community relations officer, Graeme Soward, on the ground to provide a one-stop information and access point for residents. This role will continue throughout demolition. Residents can contact Graeme regarding site activities on 1800 282 909 and at community@frasersgreencliff.com. Our demolition works constitute one of the biggest recycling projects undertaken in the world. We are committed to targeting 90% of building waste by weight recycling. This includes 100% recycling of steel, iron and timber. Local residents can keep informed of our progress on site activities and recycling through site notice boards which will be erected at prominent places on site, our email bulletins and on this website. This is a significant and exciting stage in the evolution of the Frasers Broadway precinct.
